The man, only identified as Seifu D., walked into the casino Saturday and sat down at International Gaming Technology’s Wheel of Fortune slot machine. It wasn’t long before he hit a $3.1 million jackpot.
The M Resort said on its Facebook page that the winning spin paid $17,329,817 on the Nevada statewide progressive jackpot.
The jackpot has been reset and currently stands at $10 million.
Officials at IGT, which manufactures the slot and pays out the progressives, say they are still gathering information this morning.
The latest win came nearly two years after a woman hit a $12.7 million Megabucks jackpot Jan. 21, 2011, at the Aria. The record remains $39.7 million to a California software engineer March 21, 2003, at the Excalibur.
A Texas woman hit a $2,832,044.74 jackpot Friday while playing a Bombs Away Bombshells slot machine at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, game developer International Game Technology said.
The woman, identified only as Monica B., was shocked to find out she had won and immediately called her husband to tell him the news, officials said. She was playing a Money Madness MegaJackpots progressive machine.
“We are ecstatic to be part of this life-changing moment for Monica and her husband,” said Staci Alonso, IGT vice president of customer marketing. “Our MegaJackpots games have entertained countless players worldwide and have transformed the lives of thousands of players by making them instant millionaires.”
IGT launched the MegaJackpots progressive product line in 1986 with the introduction of the Megabucks slot game and has since produced more than 1,400 millionaires and awarded more than $5 billion in jackpots. The biggest jackpot was more than $39 million won in March 2003 at the Excalibur in Las Vegas.
Megabucks winner used ‘free play’ credits to score jackpot
The newest Megabucks winner is a woman from the Las Vegas Valley who used her “free play” credits to hit the $17.3 million jackpot.
The woman told officials at IGT, which manufacturers the Megabucks slot, that she’d stopped into the M Resort on Friday night in Henderson to use her free play credits and dining vouchers. When jackpot symbols lined up, someone playing the next machine had to tell her she’d claimed the prize of $17,329,817.80. The winner asked to remain anonymous. She told IGT that she plans to use the money to pay off her house and take care of her family.
Friday marked the first Megabucks progressive to hit in Nevada since June 15, 2011, when a gambler won $10.3 million at the Grand Sierra Casino in Reno. Megabucks progressives have hit three times in Las Vegas since 2011, including twice within three months at the Aria.
Since 1986, IGT has awarded Megabucks jackpots of more than $1 billion nationwide and $728 million in Nevada.
After a win, the jackpot resets to $10 million.
